Mponeng Gold Mine, Gauteng Mining Technology Mining AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine is located in Gauteng province of South Africa. It is mined to an average depth of 2,800m-3,400m below surface and is one of the world’s deepest and richest gold mines with grades at over 8g/t.
Located less than a 100km west of Johannesburg on the Witwatersrand where gold mining dates back to the late 1800s, work on the on first shaft at the modern Mponeng mine began in 1981.

The coronavirus outbreak in South Africa has closed Mponeng, the world’s deepest gold mine after 164 workers tested positive for the disease. 2021-04-09 · AngloGold Ashanti’s Savuka gold mine is situated in Gauteng, South Africa. The underground mine is the second deepest mine in the world, at a depth of nearly four kilometres. It produced 49,000oz of gold in 2011 at a cost of $864/oz. The mine is approaching the end of its productive life with majority of the ore having been exhausted. Gold is a great investment because it maintains its value in the long term. It's an excellent hedge against inflation because its price usually rises when the cost of living increases.
Gold was first discovered there in 1886, and it is speculated that the discovery may have only been possible because of an asteroid impact. The Vredefort crater, the world’s largest impact crater at about 200 miles in diameter, is now 2.02 billion years old and potentially helped reveal the Witwatersrand gold outcrops. The Mponeng gold mine, located west of Johannesburg and owned by AngloGold Ashanti, takes advantage of some of the deepest and richest areas of this deposit.

Mponeng Mine is a deep level underground gold mine operating between 3,160m and 3,740m below mine datum (BMD*) and is currently the deepest mine in the world with development at 3,841m BMD. Future mining is planned to deepen the shaft bottom to 4,227m BMD.
